This project began with historical research, as students examined original floor plans, photographs, and archival documents to understand the hotel’s intricate design. Working with these historical references, they used AutoCAD to draft precise technical drawings before transitioning into SketchUp to construct a detailed 3D model.
Throughout the process, students faced the challenge of interpreting incomplete records, making informed design decisions, and refining their models to achieve historical accuracy. Every detail—from the hotel’s iconic façade to its interior layout—has been meticulously recreated to offer a faithful digital representation of this lost landmark.
A vision for the future
While the exterior of the Adelphi Hotel has been carefully reconstructed, the project doesn’t stop there. Future phases will explore reimagining the hotel’s internal spaces, creating interactive digital environments that could house retail stores, cafes, and bars. These additions will allow students to blend heritage with contemporary design, envisioning how a historic site could function in today’s urban landscape.
The final model serves as both a visual and educational tool, allowing the public to experience the grandeur of the Adelphi Hotel once more. By blending history, technology, and design, students have not only developed industry-ready skills but have also played a role in preserving Perth’s architectural heritage for future generations.
